Engineering Event Photography at the SOE IRTE Skills Challenge Awards
Bristol Video Co. recently provided engineering event photography for the Society of Operations Engineers’ IRTE Skills Challenge Awards at the British Motor Museum.
Held on 25 September 2026, the awards brought together apprentices, qualified technicians, transport operators, sponsors and engineering professionals to recognise technical achievement across the road transport industry. Our two-photographer team covered the ceremony, winners, teams, presentations and natural interactions throughout the event.
The awards were the culmination of the 2026 IRTE Skills Challenge: an annual competition designed to test and develop engineering skills across passenger service vehicles and heavy goods vehicles. The competition covers practical areas including mechanical engineering, electrical diagnostics, bodywork, vehicle inspection and increasingly the technologies required to maintain electric vehicles.
Engineering Event Photography for a Changing Transport Industry
The IRTE Skills Challenge is more than an awards ceremony. It gives engineers and technicians an opportunity to demonstrate the practical skills required to keep buses, coaches and commercial vehicles operating safely and efficiently.
For the 2026 passenger service vehicle competition, technicians faced tasks involving both electric and diesel vehicles, electrical fault diagnosis, braking systems and other real-world engineering problems. Testing took place at S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol, while the HGV element was held with DAF in Nottingham.
That mix of technologies reflects the reality of modern road transport. Engineers entering the industry need to understand established mechanical systems while also developing the electrical, diagnostic and safety skills required for increasingly complex electric and electronically controlled vehicles.
IRTE, the Institute of Road Transport Engineers, is a professional sector of the Society of Operations Engineers. It supports professionals working across HGV and PSV engineering and promotes standards in vehicle maintenance, compliance, safety and professional development.

Supporting Emerging Engineering Talent
One of the most important aspects of the Skills Challenge is its focus on developing engineers at different stages of their careers.
Apprentices and experienced technicians are given practical problems rather than simply being judged on theoretical knowledge. The competition allows participants to test themselves against industry standards, gain experience outside their normal workshop environment and have their achievements recognised by employers and the wider engineering sector.
The Society of Operations Engineers supports this wider progression through membership, continuing professional development, mentoring, technical resources and routes towards professional registration. Apprentice and graduate membership also gives engineers a route into the organisation earlier in their careers.
The Skills Challenge puts those aims into practice. It gives emerging talent a platform while helping operators identify and develop skilled people within their engineering teams.
The competition covers areas such as:
- Mechanical diagnosis and repair
- Electrical fault finding
- EV and electric driveline technology
- Diesel vehicle systems
- Brake inspection and measurement
- Vehicle safety and DVSA inspection
- Bodywork and coachbuilding
- HGV and PSV maintenance
These are practical skills with a direct impact on vehicle reliability, passenger safety and the ability of operators to manage changing fleet technology.
Photographing the IRTE Awards at the British Motor Museum
The British Motor Museum provided a fitting location for the awards.
Based in Gaydon, Warwickshire, the Museum holds the world’s largest collection of historic British cars and tells the story of Britain’s motor industry. Its conference and event facilities are also regularly used for automotive, engineering and technology events.
For an event focused on the next generation of transport engineers, the setting created a clear connection between the history of British automotive engineering and the technologies technicians are working with today.
Our photography brief was split between two photographers: myself, Rowan, and Mark. Mark focused on structured post-award photography, including winners, teams, challenge participants and group portraits, while I concentrated on candid coverage of the presentations, guest interactions and the wider atmosphere of the event.
This provided SOE with a broader image library rather than simply a record of people receiving trophies.
The final coverage included:
- Award winners
- Apprentice and qualified technician teams
- Group portraits
- Presentations on stage
- Speakers and presenters
- Sponsors and industry representatives
- Networking and guest interactions
- Candid event photography
- Venue and atmosphere photography
The finished photographs were supplied in high-resolution and web-ready formats for use across press, marketing, internal communications and future event promotion.

Building on Our Work with SOE and IRTE
The awards were also a continuation of Bristol Video Co.’s work with the Society of Operations Engineers and IRTE.
Earlier in 2026, our team spent several days documenting the practical stage of the IRTE Skills Challenge at S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol. We produced video and photography covering competitors, sponsor interviews, engineering demonstrations, DVSA activities and interviews with SOE representatives, including CEO Emma Thompson.
That project included filming around modern electric buses as well as the practical engineering exercises taking place during the competition. We also provided fast-turnaround photography throughout the event for SOE’s social media, communications and press activity.
Returning for the awards ceremony meant we could follow the project from the engineering challenges themselves through to the recognition of the people who took part.
SOE has become a close production partner for Bristol Video Co., and working across multiple events also means we understand the organisation, its audiences and the technical subjects being communicated. That continuity is particularly useful on engineering projects, where photographers and filmmakers need to know which processes, people and details are important rather than simply documenting what happens in front of them.
Why Specialist Engineering Event Photography Matters
Engineering event photography needs to communicate more than the scale of an event.
For organisations operating in engineering, manufacturing, automotive and transport, photography often has to show technical credibility as well as people and atmosphere. A strong set of event images can become material for recruitment campaigns, industry press, sponsorship reports, social media, websites and future event promotion.
That means looking beyond conventional awards photographs and capturing the wider story: the engineers being recognised, the relationships between operators and suppliers, the technology behind the sector and the people entering the profession.
For the IRTE Skills Challenge, this was especially relevant. The event connects established mechanical engineering disciplines with technologies such as electric drivetrains, advanced diagnostics and modern vehicle electronics. The photographs therefore needed to represent both professional achievement and a transport industry undergoing significant technical change.
