Engineering Video Production for the IRTE Skills Challenge

Bristol Video Company recently delivered engineering video production and photography services for the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE) at the IRTE Skills Challenge. Over several days, our team captured interviews with key sponsors, competitors and SOE CEO Emma Thompson, alongside EV vehicle demonstrations, DVSA training activities and professional event photography.

The project showcased how engineering video production can help organisations communicate technical expertise, engage future talent and promote innovation across the transport sector.

What is the IRTE Skills Challenge?

The IRTE Skills Challenge is one of the UK’s leading competitions for young technicians working within the bus, coach and commercial vehicle sectors. Organised by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE), part of the Society of Operations Engineers, the event tests participants through a series of practical and technical challenges designed to reflect real-world engineering scenarios.

With the increasing adoption of electric vehicle technology, the competition included specialist tasks involving modern EV buses and coaches, helping to prepare technicians for the evolving demands of the transport sector.

Capturing the Future of Engineering

Over the course of the event, Bristol Video Company delivered a complete content production package covering both photography and video.

Our production team conducted interviews with key sponsors, stakeholders and industry representatives, as well as capturing insights from competitors participating in the challenge. We also filmed an exclusive interview with SOE CEO Emma Thompson, highlighting the importance of developing engineering talent and supporting the next generation of technicians.

Alongside formal interviews, we captured engaging vox-pop content with participants and visitors, helping to tell the story of the event from multiple perspectives.

Engineering Video Production: Filming the Latest Electric Vehicle Technology

One of the highlights of the event was filming around a brand-new electric bus, showcasing the cutting-edge technology now entering the UK transport sector.

Our team captured a combination of cinematic visuals, technical demonstrations and participant interactions to create a compelling visual narrative around the future of sustainable transport.

These assets will help the Society of Operations Engineers promote future events while demonstrating their commitment to supporting innovation within the industry.

Supporting DVSA Training Activities

In addition to the competition activities, Bristol Video Company also documented specialist DVSA training sessions taking place on coaches throughout the event.

Capturing these training exercises provided valuable content for future educational and promotional use, helping to showcase the breadth of professional development opportunities available within the sector.

Professional Event Photography Delivered Daily

Alongside video production, our lead photographer Mark Oshana provided comprehensive event photography throughout the competition.

Each day, carefully curated hero images and photography selections were delivered to the client by 5pm, enabling the Society of Operations Engineers to share high-quality content across social media, internal communications and press coverage while the event was still underway.

This rapid turnaround ensured the event maintained momentum online and maximised engagement throughout the competition.
